It makes me sick that John McCain wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, which would never get past the senate anyways. It’s our bodies WE should have the choice as to what goes on with them, which I could lead into the death with dignity issue but I won’t.
I know what you will say, “If you don’t want a baby don’t have sex.” Well it’s not the 1700’s anymore. We all do it, we use protection but things happen. Like I don’t know… rape. Yea what about them? Do they have the right to an abortion if we overturn this case? No? Well what’s your plan for those children born from rape? Adoption? Foster care? Most children don’t get adopted in the US. Our foster care is appalling. I know this from seeing it myself, no I was not a foster child but I knew a lot of them, I knew foster families and it’s a state of living I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Granted some, very few in numbers, are good to those children that come across their path. Sadly most do not get that treatment.
Obama believes in a woman’s right to choose. I like that. I also like that he supports stem cell research from human embryonic stem cells derived from embryos donated (with consent) from in vitro fertilization clinics. I also like that these embryos must be deemed in excess and created based solely for the purpose of fertility treatment. I know McCain also supports stem cell research but it excludes the embryonic which have the best potential to find cures for our biggest killers.
I believe that stem cell research is the next scientific frontier. It holds so many possibilities for change and provides hope for many with life threatening diseases. It could mean an end to diabetes which plagues my family and many of my friends. The list is ever growing on what this break through could lead to other than human cloning which I do not condone. (Unless it’s used to clone organs that are in high demand for transplants) Some of the diseases it could help find a cure for are Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, heart diseases, stroke, type I diabetes, birth defects, and spinal injuries. Also it could be used in the replacement and repairment of amputated and damaged organs as well as making transplants less of a risk because of the possibility of having a clone of your own needed organ waiting in the wings.
It’s just where do we draw our moral and ethical lines if it could mean saving a life, or a few hundred of them… I believe life is a precious gift, if I can help to make someone else’s gift last longer I would throw my morals and ethics to the wind (to certain extents) to save them or my loved ones.
Have you ever had a loved one forget who you are, forget the memories of your own shared child milestones? It’s a hard thing to watch someone you love and care about so deeply loose their mind and memories. To watch ‘poppy’ or ‘gamma’ slowly turn into someone you don’t know. I fear this outcome for my own parents. For the effect it could have on my own children to watch their grandparents forget them, then having to explain what is happening. I just believe that as much as a pull it would have on our precious morals and ethics stem cell research could alleviate so much more heart ache from the world.
